Hectic is built around the sound of the 1988 Operation Ivy EP. The dirty side is a harder, overdriven stompbox distortion, built from the gear used on the record: a ProCo Rat-style pedal into a Roland Jazz Chorus-style clean.* On the other side, an aggressive but controlled clean channel built for playing fast. Keeping the distortion low on the clean tone is what lets the triads come through quick and clean.
"Hectic captures the sound I used on that 1988 EP, an overdriven stompbox punk-rock distortion. But it's also got a clean channel that's punchy and aggressive without being too aggressive, so I could play really fast on it. The trick was keeping the distortion low on the clean tone. That's what let me rip the triads fast, like 'Yellin' in My Ear' and 'Healthy Body.' "
